  7. Welcome to AliasZoo, the quickest and easiest way to get control over the mountain of Alias files living on your Hard Drive.

For a complete description of how AliasZoo works see the 'AliasZoo Help' item under the Help menu when AliasZoo is running (the help file can be saved as a TeachText document for later reference).  Also please note that AliasZoo REQUIRES System 7 (otherwise there would be no Aliases to look at) - sorry System 6 users.

  11. AliasZoo is being distributed by Optimize Information Control Inc. as shareware.  You have 15 days to try out AliasZoo after which, if you choose to keep it, you MUST register your copy by sending $20 (US or Canadian) to:

  43. • Though not listed in the help file there is an important aspect about AliasZoo that you should be aware of.  If you are scanning a Network volume for aliases, and AliasZoo indicates that some of the alias files do not have owners (indicated by BOLD type and the color red) be VERY cautious before deleting them.  The problem stems from the fact that network volumes can restrict portions of their contents from your view.  As a result, you may be able to 'see' the alias files, but you may not be able to 'see' their owners in some cases.  This will cause AliasZoo to tell you that an alias has no owner when, in reality, it does have an owner but you just don't have the access priviledges necessary to view it.

  45. The moral #1: be careful when deleting alias files from network volumes.

  47. • AliasZoo is limited to processing 410 aliases per volume.  If you've got more than 410 aliases on your drive, sorry.  This limitation will hopefully be removed in a future version.

  49. • When an alias points to a file on another volume, AliasZoo will automatically mount it so that it can check the owner.  If this volume was not mounted when AliasZoo started, it will unmount it before going on.  However, since the volumes are being identified by name only, a volume with the same name as the startup volume may be mounted by AliasZoo, but it will NEVER be unmounted.

  51. The moral #2: avoid giving two volumes the same name - it not only confuses the Finder, but it'll likely confuse you too.

  74.     - Moved the "Help..." menu command over to the "?" menu - where it should have been in the first place (thanks to Stew Rubenstein for that one).
  75.     - Corrected a minor problem with setting the default volume when AliasZoo was booted from a floppy disk.
  76.     - Finished adding Balloon help to everything.  So turn it on and watch them go...

  79.     - Corrected and improved some minor interface features.
  80.     - Added a button labelled "This Item" to the Attach dialog.  This corrects a problem a few people had noticed when trying to re-connect an alias to a folder or a volume - namely, that you couldn't do it.  Now you can.

  83.     - Added support for Double-clicking on an alias file.  This brings up either an Info box showing the location of the alias's owner, or the Attach dialog.  Which one appears can be set in the Preferences dialog (thanks to an anonymous user at America Online who sent me this idea).
  84.     - Changed the way alias's are re-attached.  Now you can select multiple alias files, click the attach button, and have a dialog box brought up for each alias file.  Makes attaching multiple aliases a lot quicker (thanks again to that anonymous America Online user).
  85.     - Added a line in the Attach dialog that tells you which alias file you are currently re-connecting.
  86.     - Added the "Find", "Delete", and "Attach" items to the File menu.  Now these functions can be selected with Command key equivalents as well as clicking on their appropriate buttons.

  89.     - Corrected a problem that only appeared when AliasZoo encountered an Error #-1304 while scanning for aliases.  The bug would cause no aliases to be displayed even after the error was corrected (requiring the user to quit AliasZoo and start over to fix the problem).
  90.     - Added support for non-ColorQuickDraw Macs.  Forgetting to add this was an oversight on my part (I just forgot that having System 7 doesn't ensure that you have ColorQD).  Major mistake.  Will the owners of the Mac Plus's and Mac SE's out there please forgive me?
